Post Care Instructions

The end result of your procedure depends greatly on following the post care protocol. Please follow these instructions for 7 days.

  • Keep the lips clean and moist.  Use a clean cool wet washcloth to gently wipe the lips to clean them in the morning, after eating and before bed.
  • Apply a generous amount of A&D ointment (or Aquaphor) as many times as necessary to keep the lips moist.  Apply only with a clean Q-Tip, or thoroughly cleansed hands.
  • When brushing your teeth, be gentle around the area and avoid getting toothpaste on the lips.  Avoid using mouthwash that contains alcohol.
  • Keep the lips sealed while washing your face.
  • DO NOT rub, scratch or pick at the area.
  • DO NOT apply makeup or any other lip product besides the ointment provided to you in your post care kit.
  • AVOID extensive and direct sun exposure.
  • AVOID spicy and salty foods.
  • AVOID kissing.

What to expect after your procedure and during healing:

  • There may be minor to excessive swelling in the area.  This should subside within 12-72 hours.  You may ice the area if necessary.
  • You may experience redness, tenderness, itchiness and/or burning, which will subside overtime.
  • Pigment can look very dark and bright right after the procedure and couple days following.  Color will fade and soften by 50%-70% in 10-14 days.  Keep in mind that the touch up is crucial to enhancing the color, saturation, and evenness of the procedure.
  • Some pigment may drop out all together or look like it is flaking off; this can be filled in on the follow up visit in about 6-8 weeks. Some people may lose more color than others depending on how their skin heals.  This is normal and means that the color will need to be adjusted to a darker shade.
  • The color will come and go as the collagen fibers come to heal the lips and the natural exfoliating process occurs.  It is normal not to see how much color was achieved until 4 weeks out.
  • The lips will feel dry and flakey,  It is extremely important to let the skin fall of naturally, DO NOT PICK.  Keep the lips moist throughout the healing.
